The Law Says…

In DC, there is a law that sets a higher minimum wage for “security officers” who work in “office buildings”!

The Enhanced Professional Security Amendment Act of 2008 created a special minimum wage for certain District of Columbia security guards. This wage is higher than the regular minimum wage. This wage is specifically described by D.C. code § 32–1003(h)

To qualify, you must be a “security officer.” According to DC Regulations, a “security officer” is any person privately employed to perform tasks such as:

To qualify, you must also work in an “office building.” According to DC Law, an “office building” is “any commercial property where the primary functions are the transaction of administrative, business, civic, or professional services.” Residential facilities, libraries, museums, and schools are not “office buildings.”

In summary…

If you (a) work in DC, (b) as a security guard, (c) in an office building, you may be entitled to a special minimum wage that is much higher than the normal DC minimum wage.

DC Security Officer Minimum Wage from 2019-2025

Since 2019, total compensation for security officers in Washington, DC, including both hourly wages and required fringe benefits, has risen by more than $3.50 an hour.

That means stronger paychecks, better benefits, and fairer treatment for the workers who keep DC’s office buildings safe. But only if they stand up for themselves and demand to be paid what the law requires!
